Given that you are experiencing issues with one of your most popular shows, you could take this opportunity to redirect your focus to where it should be.
If anyone else has ideas for shows that TLC could put on that would actually broaden our understanding of the world and beyond, please make a comment about it.
1. "Home and Away" In "Home and Away," the audience would follow the experience of families as they live in another country. What would it be like if your family lived in a different country? The first installment is called, "Home and Away- The North." 3 American families will transfer the basic structure of their lives to one of the advanced social democracies around the world. What's it like to live and work in another country? Watch as three diverse families from the US exchange places for a full month with three similar European families.
Episodes will feature in depth experiences with police, the prisons, and education among other things.
An entire episode will be devoted to describing the generous social and financial benefits for people living in those countries. Did you know that most countries in Europe pay all families with children a set amount per child per month? (Why yes! I do have an agenda! Would you like a copy?)
Something like "Die Norden." "Die Norden" is a Finnish TV documentary series that exposes Americans to basic social systems of the social democracies of N. Europe.
2. Teaching/Learning competition show- Assemble a group of people to work with an average person in a specific field to see if they can reach an expert level of performance.
Educators, Brain Researchers, And experts in the field will create and implement a path to success for the participant. What are the keys to learning, for real?
Along the way, important topics like pedagogy and brain research will be covered in an entertaining and informative way. Investigations into the psychology of learning will focus on the prepared mind. Important and useful research about brain development and learning in children will be useful in demonstrating the effectiveness of the teaching and learning.
In the end, we discover that teaching is always learning, and the learner is the teacher.
What can you become in a year?
3. The Big Questions This is just another copy of a British show. It does a great job of putting representatives of major ideas on a stage together and forcing them to get along for a full hour while they debate their issues.
Past episodes have included "Is There a Difference Between a Cult and a Religion?"
That's just a few. I'm sure if I ever remembered to write down the other ideas I have, there would be more.
Wouldn't it be nice if "The Learning Channel" were about learning? We have a global community now, but Americans don't seem to be able to move beyond their own backyard when it comes to understanding the world.
